Characteristics of commodity futures transactions and the impact of rollover

In commodity futures transactions, price differences usually arise for each delivery month, and this takes into account supply/demand trends and storage costs.

If the price of a longer futures contract is higher than that of a shorter contract (hereinafter referred to as "Contango"), the futures pricing is affected by depreciation leading up to the expiration date. In this case, the benchmark index will be continuously affected by this depreciation because it regularly updates the futures transactions it references to subsequent contracts (hereinafter referred to as "Rollover").

On the other hand, if the price of a longer futures contract is lower than that of a shorter contract (hereinafter referred to as "Backwardation"), the futures pricing will be affected by appreciation leading up to the expiration date. In this case, the benchmark index will be continuously affected by this appreciation because of Rollover.

Investment styles for consideration

(medium- to long-term investments)
As described above, the impact of commodity futures transactions on the benchmark index will vary depending on the pricing for each delivery month. In particular, when there is a Contango commodity futures market the benchmark index will over time be continuously affected by depreciation, so investors should take this into careful consideration when making medium- to long-term investments.
